If you haven’t seen it by now, you should definitely check out this documentary on hip-hop culture, with accent on graffiti and street art in New York, named “Style Wars” aired in 1983 at PBS, directed by Toni Silver.
Center of the activities in the documentary is N.Y. street culture and graffiti art in the early ’80s. This time is considered as basic and fundamental for the development of the street art and also it’s considered as a leader to the mainstream culture that had taken over the whole world. Leading roles in “Style Wars” are couple of street artist who are struggling to express their opinions, culture, beliefs through art, transforming grey, urban face of N.Y. to public playground with spectacular canvases.
